P.E.A.R.L. is a multi-disciplinary community-based arts project for current and former female inmates of Topeka Correctional Facility. Created by artists So Yeon Park Carol Bradbury, the project has included 14 workshops in Topeka Correctional Facility, 15 workshops with prison parolees at Topeka Parole Office, 3 rehearsals, a variety of live monologue performances by both inmates and parolees, documentation and ongoing editing of documentation to create a documentary film. The intentions were to give the participants an opportunity to embody their life experience by recognizing, detaching and transforming the past in order to reconstruct the present and enrich the future. The outcomes of this project initiate a dialogue between the general public and prison populations, thereby utilizing the Arts to alter misconceptions and facilitate community support for successful ex-offender reentry into the community. This pilot project was created in partnerships with the Kansas Department of Corrections, the Topeka Correctional Facility, The Kansas Reentry Policy Council, Arts in Prison and University of Kansas. |
